MUSEUM OF FOREST OF STONE TABLETS IN XI’AN |
 | |
|
|
--THE FOREST OF STONE STELE-- |
To preserve the written daily lessons, early rulers ordered the calligraphers to engrave them on stone tablets. The museum was once the site of the Temple of Confucius (Northern Song 960-1127). Close to the south gate of Xi’an City Wall, it is on Sanxue Street. For safe keeping as early as 1087 AD some precious stone steles were moved here. The Stone Forest now houses over |
| 3,000 pieces of stone steles ranging from the Han dynasty to the Qing dynasty. It covers an area of 30,000 square meters or more. The exhibition is divided into seven exhibitions halls and two sections: Xi’an Forest of Stone Tablets and Stone Sculptures. Included with the steles, on display are the works of famous calligraphers, painters and historical records. A bell weighing six tons is named Jingyun and was declared world famous at the 1964 Bell Exhibition. | |
