BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE THREE GORGES

The Yangtze River, with an overall length of more than 6,300 kilometers, is the longest river of China. When the Yangtze River reaches the eastern Sichuan Basin in southwest China, it cuts through the Wushan Mountain, creating one of nature's most fantastic sights -- the Three Gorges.

The Three Gorges is one of top 10 points of interests in China and on the top of top 40 most beautiful tourist sights. It stretches 192 kilometers - from Baidicheng (White Emperor City) in Chongqing in the west to Yichang in Hubei Province in the east, including Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge, known as big Three Gorges. What’s more, there are Minor Three Gorges on Daning River and Minimal Three Gorges on Madu River. Here the Yangtze River course suddenly narrows and the waters become turbulent. With Sheer cliffs and steep mountains rise on either side, it is full of shoals, reefs, sharp turns, billowy whirlpools. Many ancient poets and famous writers once created numerous eulogy literatures about it. Guo Moruo, a author and poet, once wrote a poem The Fantastic Sichuan Path -- which incisively and vividly described the condition of the flow in the Three Gorges. Shui Jing Zhu-- a work on the ancient geography of China by Li Daoyuan--portrayed it lively as: For seven hundred miles in the Three Gorges, continuous mountains are on both sides of the river, almost no indentations. Layers of rocks and shield-like peaks shelter the sky and the sun. Also, the moon cannot be seen until the midnight.

Characteristics of The Three Gorges of the Yangtze River

The Three Gorges of the Yangtze River goes through two provinces. On both of the banks, there are high cliffs with splendid scenes. The mountains along the river are 700 to 800 meters higher than the surface on average and the narrowest point of the river is about 100 meters. As the construction of the giant Three Gorges Dam, the Three Gorges became a distinguished and hot tourist area all over the world. There are plenty of scenic spots along the Three Gorges, such as famous Fengdu Ghosts City, Shibao village in Zhong county, Temple to General Zhangfei in Yunyang county, Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, Xiling Gorge, grandiose Three Gorges Dam and the Minor Three Gorges on Daning River, etc.

Climate and Traffic

The Three Gorges of Yangtze River is of warm and humid subtropical climate which is obviously affected by the landform full of gorges. Among those, the serpentine Wu Gorge possess of typical characteristics of valley climate due to its deep gorges and long valleys. It may be the representation of climate in the Three Gorges area. The annual mean temperature is 18.4℃(65.12℉). January is the coldest with a average temperature of 7.1℃(44.78℉) and July is the hottest with a average temperature of 29.3℃(84.74℉). The annual rainfall here is 1000-1400 mm which mainly comes in July and August. Mild winter, torrid summer, profuse rainfall and distinct seasons—all of these are not different from Sichuan basin and plain in lower reaches of the Yangtze River. However, because of the deep gorges, the bottoms of these gorges receive sunlight in quite short time. In winter, sunshine comes for only 2 to 3 hours around the noon and in summer for about 5-6 hours. In the valleys, the wind is extremely strong and fix to specific direction—mainly in the same direction with the valley: east wind or west wind. Air is blocked out here, therefore, moisture gets together to cloud or fog easily. In summer, there are strong thunder storms and it’s one storm center of the country. And in autumn, the sun shines in the high sky with light cloud for most of time. In winter, drizzly rain of the gorge may last for a couple of days. By the late spring and early summer, the weather is chop and change. Cloud in the morning and rain in the evening—that’s another kind of prospect.
